ABOUT THE IMAGE: Fantasia is a 1940 American animated musical anthology film produced and released by Walt Disney Productions, with story direction by Joe Grant and Dick Huemer and production supervision by Walt Disney and Ben Sharpsteen. The third Disney animated feature film, it consists of eight animated segments set to pieces of classical music conducted by Leopold Stokowski, seven of which are performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Music critic and composer Deems Taylor acts as the film's Master of Ceremonies who introduces each segment in live action.
The name "Howard Baldwin" has been written in pencil near the upper right corner of this model sheet. It could be referencing an unknown Disney artist who is listed amongst those striking in 1941 or possibly a Warner Bros. animator / story artist of the same name. This piece has been mounted on a cardboard backing and shows signs of light production wear. The embedded date reads December 1st, 1939.
ABOUT THE MEDIUM: A model sheet is a group of character drawings illustrating different poses and expressions of a cartoon character. Because a number of artists worked on a single cartoon, these sheets were circulated to the animators to give a uniform look and feel to a character throughout a production.
