ABOUT THE IMAGE: Fantasia is a 1940 American animated musical anthology film produced and released by Walt Disney Productions, with story direction by Joe Grant and Dick Huemer and production supervision by Walt Disney and Ben Sharpsteen. The third Disney animated feature film, it consists of eight animated segments set to pieces of classical music conducted by Leopold Stokowski, seven of which are performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Music critic and composer Deems Taylor acts as the film's Master of Ceremonies who introduces each segment in live action.
The title of this model sheet refers to Gabriel Pierné's "Cydalise,” music from the ballet "Cydalise et le chèvre-pied" which was the original choice for the segment of Fantasia now known as "The Pastoral Symphony."
The name "Lee Hooper" has been written in pencil near the lower right corner of this piece. It likely refers to the "funny animal artist" of the same name who worked for Dell/Western in the 1940s-1960s drawing comics, many of which featured Disney characters. This model sheet could have been sent to Hooper as a point of reference for his comics or come into his possession later in life.
This piece shows signs of heavy production wear: multiple corner rips creases, moderate wrinkling and missing section of paper in lower left corner. The embedded date on this model sheet reads Sept. 27th, 1938.
ABOUT THE MEDIUM: A model sheet is a group of character drawings illustrating different poses and expressions of a cartoon character. Because a number of artists worked on a single cartoon, these sheets were circulated to the animators to give a uniform look and feel to a character throughout a production.
